We had another fabulous day at Vaucluse House - the weather had dried up and the grass was green and dry too - in fact it was so dry that after washing the car, it only took a few metres of the dusty carriageway to cover the car with a film of light brown colouring, most notable on a black car! This year we had 29 cars attend - about typical for each year we hold the event and moving it forward in the year meant that it wasn't boiling hot, just a nice temperature to enjoy the picnic.
We had about 20 minutes to get some group photos with the "classics" in the middle and the later cars in a semi-circle around them. We then headed over to our normal position in the paddock with Bruce and Don directing traffic to get the cars into groups. We managed to cover every decade that Maserati has produced road cars ranging from a Quattroporte I through to a 2019 GranTurismo! We didn't have a lot of the classics this year, however we made up for it with plenty of GranTurismo and GranSports with a Levante and BiTurbo Spyder to top and tail the display!
This year to make it easier for members, we provided an option to register for Our Italian Table to serve a wonderful spread of cold meats, vegetables, bread and fruit. This was taken up by quite a few members and seeing the table presented was a great addition to the day. Coffee was still available at the main building, so all bases were covered. It was also pleasing to see many new members come along for their first event and we look forward to seeing them again at future events.
Bruce, Don and Todd were on hand to judge the cars with a simplified checklist from ICJAG, the international concours judging group of which Don and Todd are members. This improved the speed at which they could review each car and the class winners were Sam T, Richard T, Greg G, Warren A, Paul C, Renee S and Nigel M. McCarrolls Maserati very kindly provided some caps for the class winners and also a beautiful Maserati watch that was won in a cap draw by Colin A. McCarrolls also provided a special wheel alignment won by Warren A.
Our picnic and concours style event is always a popular event and pipped the May Hunter Valley run by a few extra members to be our best for the year and it always feels like it is the defining date to start spring properly.
